“Container student accommodation”

Students at the University of Coburg decided to pursue the idea of container living, and in June 2016 presented a prototype for their “Container student accommodation” project.

It is becoming ever more difficult for students to find accommodation which is both suitable and affordable. A team comprising interior architecture students and a number of cooperation partners made it their mission to combat this shortage of affordable housing.

The first student housing container and additional designs for the interior fittings were presented within the framework of the “Design Campus-Open” initiative by students. As the prototype met with lively interest, the first modular construction “Student living container complex” comprising around 216 residential units is planned to be constructed from 2017 with the support of the City of Coburg, which has made available a plot of land. On completion, there are plans to launch nationwide marketing of the flexible living properties.

The “Living in a Container” concept will relieve the accommodation shortage and offer students an affordable but still high-end alternative to conventional student digs.

A highly efficient system of room division with high-end exclusively designed interiors offers living ambience specifically aimed at this target group.

The containers are equipped with the latest state-of-the-art technology. As a cooperation partner, RIDI Leuchten GmbH will be equipping the containers with efficient LED lighting and lending them an atmosphere of comfort and well-being.

Other partner companies involved in the project are:

  •  Algeco GmbH Interface – World market leader in flexible room systems & secure storage solutions
  •  Interface – World’s biggest manufacture of carpet times
